BMW Motorcycles:

Requirements for BMW motorcycle hire are:

- A South African Class 'A' (motorcycles 125 cm3 and above) motorcycle operating licence, held without endorsements for a minimum of two years, or:
- A valid international driver's licence, printed in English with integral photograph, applicable to motorcycles 500 cm3 and over.
- Valid proof of identity and residence (green bar-coded SA identity document, or valid passport.)
- Contractors will require a valid (unexpired) credit card. If this cannot be produced, an up-front cash deposit will be required.
- Motorcycles can only be hired to those aged 25 and over.

A full range of safety gear (BMW helmets, jackets, trousers and gloves) is available for hire. To meet all your luggage requirements, hard pannier cases, top-boxes, tank bags and tail packs are also available. Please contact me as soon as possible to establish availability of any motorcycles and equipment you would like to hire.

Discount: 10% off all BMW rentals of 4 days or more, between May 1 and August 31 each year.

Nick's review: This is BMW's latest incarnation of the large-capacity touring enduro (the GS stands for Gelaende/Strasse - German for Offroad/Road.) Careful refinement of the GS concept since the launch of the original R80GS in 1980 has kept it absolutely peerless.

More power, comfort and refinement than ever before. It's not one of the country's most popular bikes for nothing. I love it to bits.

Arguably the best all-purpose BMW I've ever ridden. It'll do whatever you want it to with no drama. Ewan McGregor even chose one for a round-the-world trip... I can't argue with that.

Nick's review: The R1150 GS was launched in 1999 as an update of the hugely popular R1100GS. Improving on a bike already proven to be a winner was difficult, but they managed it! Apart from the radical styling, tweaks are mainly limited to 45cm3 more engine capacity (with a healthy increase in power and torque), shortened Paralever shaft drive for better offroad handling, and the addition of a sixth gear for easier open-road cruising.

A very capable bike - it's hugely exciting to ride and will do pretty much anything you ask of it.

Nick's review: A carefully-updated evolution of the R1150RT. It's an extraordinarily refined tourer with a lot of creature comforts, including a full fairing and electrically-adjustable windshield. Probably the best choice there is for serious high-speed, long-distance touring, especially two-up.

Nick's review: The Roadster's a model popular with South Africans who need a bike to do everything but still want to enjoy their riding - because it's versatile and doesn't disappoint. The high torque output at low revs combined with the relaxed riding position make it incredibly easy to ride for hours at almost any speed. This bike is particularly ideal for the shorter tours where you are likely to encounter many winding roads and mountain passes.

Nick's review: I owned one for a while before upgrading to my current R1100S. I have a soft spot for these; they're light, powerful, agile and good-looking, not to mention tough and reliable. It's sales figures don't lie - a lot of serious commuters and tourers throughout South Africa own them. A devastating town tool that's just as good on the open road.

Requirements for Harley-Davidson motorcycle hire are:

- A South African Class 'A' (motorcycles 125 cm3 and above) motorcycle operating licence, held without endorsements for a minimum of two years, or:
- A valid international driver's licence, printed in English with integral photograph, applicable to motorcycles 500 cm3 and over.
- Confirmation that you possess the ability to handle heavyweight motorcycles.
- Valid proof of identity and residence (green bar-coded SA identity document, or valid passport.)
- Contractors will require a refundable holding deposit of R7 500 and a once-off insurance fee of R150, both payable up-front.
- Motorcycles can only be hired to those aged 25 and over.

Only current, 2006 and 2007 year-model bikes are stocked for your riding pleasure.

Harley-Davidson-approved helmets and rain gear are available upon request. All hire bikes are fitted with detachable windscreen, engine guards, pillion back rest, saddlebags and luggage racks for your convenience. Please contact me as soon as possible to establish availability of any motorcycles and equipment you would like to hire.

Please note: The rider/renter must collect and return the motorcycles and accessories personally within normal shop hours, at a Harley-Davidson-approved drop-off point. If this is not possible, arrangements must be made in advance.
