This tour takes us through terrain which, thousands of years ago, was the birthplace of mankind as we know it, and today holds the centrepieces of recorded human history. The roads and scenery are by turns lonely, beautiful and challenging.

The Southwest Breakaway is my shortest tour, designed from it's conception to span three days. Taking into account the unique requirements of the modern pressurized business executive, the tour always begins on a Friday morning, ending on a Sunday evening. This ensures that minimal time is taken from a tight Monday-to-Friday work schedule, making this tour ideal for the lifestyle motorcyclist with little leisure time at his or her disposal.

Day 1: Gauteng, Free State Province.

The trip begins with a relaxed meander through the Vaal Triangle and Vaal Dam. Leaving the chaos of the big city far behind, we spend the first night in the artistic and theatrical haven of Clarens, at the idyllic Northern tip of Lesotho.
The route: Midrand to Clarens via Johannesburg, Grasmere, Sebokeng, Vereeniging, Deneysville, the Vaal Dam, Oranjeville, Frankfort, Reitz and Bethlehem.

Day 2: Free State.
The second day is an unhurried journey along the mysterious expanse of Lesotho's Northern border, passing along the Maria Moroka nature reserve before arriving in Bloemfontein. Social activities planned for the evening ensure that no one is left out of the group spirit!
The route: Clarens to Bloemfontein via Fouriesburg, Ficksburg, Ladybrand and Thaba Nchu.

Day 3: Free State, Northwest Province, Gauteng.

On the third day, we head North, taking in the quietly scenic Bloemhof Dam nature reserve before heading home via the characterful Northwest Province and Magaliesberg.
The route: Bloemfontein to Midrand via Bultfontein, Hoopstad, Bloemhof, Wolmaransstad, Ottosdal, Ventersdorp, Derby, Boons, Magaliesberg, Krugersdorp and Randburg.
